Prohibition had banned the production, sale, and transport of alcohol nationwide since 1920, aiming to curb alcohol consumption, but leading instead to a rise in illegal speakeasies, bootlegging, and organized crime. The repeal marked a significant shift in American law and society, restoring legal alcohol sales and signaling a move toward regulation rather than prohibition.
